About Eyota

Eyota is a charming small city nestled in Olmsted County in southeastern Minnesota. Conveniently located just north of Interstate 90 and approximately 12 miles east of Rochester, Eyota offers residents the perfect blend of small-town living with easy access to big-city amenities. The city sits at the crossroads of U.S. Route 14 and Minnesota State Highway 42, making it an accessible and convenient location for commuters and travelers alike.

The south branch of the Whitewater River passes through the northern edge of the city, adding to the natural beauty of the area. With a median household income of approximately $83,684 and median home values around $293,524, Eyota represents an affordable yet growing community in one of Minnesota's most dynamic regions.

📜 Rich History of Eyota

Eyota's story begins with the arrival of white settlers staking claims in 1854. The earliest settler, Benjamin Bear, first came in 1853 to choose a prime site with an ever-flowing spring, returning the following year with his family. A stream called Bear Creek starts from this spring — today, Chester Woods Lake is formed around a portion of Bear Creek that was dammed to protect nearby Rochester from flooding.

1864 Rails from Winona reached Eyota Township; town platted by investor Samuel E. Everett
1866 Presbyterian Church organized
1869 The Eyota Advertiser newspaper first published
1873 Dr. Augustus Stinchfield became Eyota's first medical doctor
1875 Village incorporated on February 16; two-story cream colored brick school built
1898 Eyota Creamery cooperative organized
1900 Eyota Hospital built by Dr. R.C. Dugan — an eight-bed facility on Second Street
1906 Volunteer fire department established with 32 men

Notable connection: Dr. Stinchfield, who married Martha Bear (daughter of settler Benjamin Bear), left Eyota in 1892 to become the first non-family member to partner with the Mayo family in their medical practice in Rochester.
